5 Breathing Techniques to Find Your Calm

In the world of yoga, breath is life. It is the vital link between the body and the mind. Here are five simple breathing techniques you can practice anywhere to find a sense of calm and presence.

1. Sama Vritti (Equal Breathing)

Inhale for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four. This simple technique can be done anywhere, anytime, to soothe the nervous system.

2. Abdominal Breathing

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. As you inhale, feel your belly expand. As you exhale, feel it contract. This helps engage the diaphragm for deeper, more relaxing breaths.

3. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

A powerful technique to bring balance. Close your right nostril and inhale through the left. Close the left, open the right, and exhale. Inhale through the right, close it, and exhale through the left. Continue for several rounds.

4. 4-7-8 Breathing

Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale completely for 8 counts. This technique is known for its ability to promote sleep.

5. Ujjayi (Victorious Breath)

Slightly constrict the back of your throat as you breathe in and out through your nose. It creates a sound like ocean waves and is both calming and empowering.
